Holy War in Ancient Israel $18 "From the earliest days of Israel's existence as a people, holy war was a sacred institution, undertaken as a cultic act of a religious community. The concept of holy war, an intriguing and sometimes disturbing theme in the Old Testament, is given its most articulate expression in this classic study by the distinguished German scholar Gerhard von Rad. For Israel, the most important feature of holy war was the demand for faith in Yahweh's saving acts. However, von Rad argues, it was not Yahweh alone who acted; rather, because they envisioned Yahweh fighting on their behalf the Israelites themselves were inspired - and obliged - to fight even harder. In this regard, the actual events differed vastly from the picture given by the biblical narratives, which downplay and often exclude the human factor and stress the exclusive warlike action of Yahweh, thus equating holy war with absolute miracle." |

Holy Spirit: Ancient Christian Traditions, the $25 "In The Holy Spirit: Ancient Christian Traditions (formerly titled The Spirit and the Church: Antiquity), the first in a series of three volumes devoted to the history of Christian pneumatology, Stanley M. Burgess Recounts Christian efforts from the end of the first century to the end of the fifth century AD to understand the divine Third Person. The Christian centuries have witnessed a tension--sometimes waxing, sometimes waning, but always present--between the spirit of order and the spirit of prophecy. In the ancient church, representatives of institutional order, in an effort to keep the development of Spirit doctrine within a recognizable tradition, muffled the immediacy of religious experience. Prophetic elements came to be viewed with distrust and remained in the institutional church only at the cost of severe internal tension. In this work, the author recognizes the wealth of Spirit theology and activity in both traditions, and the need for modern Christians to gain a deeper and wider vision of the workings of the Holy Spirit in history and in our own generation." |

Nova - Ancient Refuge in the Holy Land $16.96 This documentary takes a look at a number of 2000 year old artifacts found in a cave near the Dead Sea and the story they might tell. Could these ancient coins have been left behind by Bar-Kokhba, the Jewish upriser whled a rebellion against the Romans so many years ago? ~ Cammila Albertson, Rovi Movie Guide returns to the same cave with the most recent archeological tools, intent on finding out more about Kokhba's difficult life. Freund's discoveries shed new light upon one of Yadin's finds--a collection of bronze ritual objects--which Yadin originally thought to be stolen from the Romans. Freund's new, controversial theory suggests that the items may originally have come from the Second Temple in Jerusalem, an important site of Jewish worship wrecked by Romans 60 years before the Bar-Kokhba revolt. Through engaging debate concerning biblical archeology, ANCIENT REFUGE IN THE HOLYLAND will broaden viewer's understandings of what cave-life was like for Bar-Kokhba's followers. |
