True Cross
Holy Cross Day
Holy Cross 14 days is one of the two major festivals in September. This festival has an interesting history. S. Helena was the mother of Emperor Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. In 325 AD, when she was 80, Helen made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to seek some important sites related to the life of Jesus. It believed it had located the site of the crucifixion of Jesus and also the grave where his body had been deposited and that the resurrection took place. Instead of the crucifixion, she discovered the wood of the cross. Therefore, it is usually depicted as standing on a cross. Helena and Constantine were then organized the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher on the site. It has been recognized a decade later, with part of the cross placed inside it in a silver casket.
In 614 the Sasanian Emperor Khosrow II withdrew the portion of the cross as a trophy, when he captured Jerusalem. Thirteen years later, in 628, Emperor Heraclius recovered the relic. He placed the cross in Constantinople at the beginning, and it took back to Jerusalem in March 21, 630. Around 1009, Christians in Jerusalem hid a part of the cross and it remained hidden until it was rediscovered during the First Crusade, August 5, 1099, by Arnulf Malecorne, the first Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, ideally at a time when morale was necessary. According to historian Simon Harding is an excellent account of this book in the first Runciman crusade.
The relic that Arnulf was discovered a small fragment of wood embedded in a gold cross, and became the most sacred relic Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. It was housed in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre under the protection of the Latin Patriarch, who marched with her before the army before each battle. It was captured by Saladin at the Battle of Hattin in 1187 and subsequently disappeared. Both the Byzantine emperor Isaac II Angelos and Queen Tamar of Georgia sought to ransom Saladin unsuccessfully. The date chosen for the festival commemorates the dedication of the church in 335 after JC .. This commemoration was originally a two-day festival. The second day, the relic itself was out of the building so that all These people could pray before it. This custom continued for many years. The event was important in the development using the cross as a symbol of strength of our faith. Before that other symbols, such as the sign of the fish were the most commonly used.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre still holds a special place in the heart of Christians, but apparently not too far from the original structure is Byzantine. Many churches possess fragmentary that are traditionally believed to be those of the True Cross. Their authenticity is not accepted universally by those of Christian faith and the accuracy of the reports surrounding the discovery of the True Cross is questioned by some Christians. Acceptance and belief in this part of the tradition that relates to early Christian church is generally limited to the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Legends Medieval its origin differ between Catholic and Orthodox tradition. These churches honor Helena as a saint, as does the Anglican Communion.

The Crusader $4.99 In the latter half of the 13th century, Christian Europe again sought to prise the Holy Land out of the grasp of the Infidel. Tens of thousands took up the Cross - some for the greater glory of God, others for baser motives: lust for power, for riches, for revenge. THE CRUSADER tells the story of the seventh and last Crusade, as experienced by a young Spanish nobleman, Francisco de Montcada. He is the hero of this novel, but his tale is told by his former friend and a fellow acolyte, a venal and moderately trustworthy Cistercian monk named Brother Lucas. For Francisco has returned from the Levant a broken and seemingly possessed man. The Inquisition decree that his tortured soul be exorcized and the task falls to Brother Lucas. Eschewing the Inquisition?s more usual methods, the monk sits with the silent, emaciated knight in his cell and talks to him. Slowly, tentatively, Francisco begins to recount his story - a tale of how an honourable man took up the Cross and found not the glory and redemption for which he?d yearned but instead unimaginable cruelty, barbarism and bloodshed. Set against a thrillingly authentic historical backdrop, this stirring novel of religious fervour and human passions, of greed and betrayal, and love and war, brings a tumultuous era brilliantly to life. |

Crusader's Cross $7.99 Critically acclaimed and bestselling crime writer James Lee Burke returns to Louisiana where his ever-popular hero, Dave Robicheaux, sleuths his way through a hotbed of sin and uncertainty. For Dave Robicheaux, life in Louisiana is filled with haunting memories of the past -- images from Vietnam, the violent streets of New Orleans, and his own troubled youth. In Crusader's Cross, a deathbed confession from an old schoolmate resurrects a story of injustice, the murder of a young woman, and a time in Robicheaux's life he has tried to forget. Her name may or may not have been Ida Durbin. It was back in the innocent days of the 1950s when Robicheaux and his brother, Jimmie, met her on a Galveston beach. She was pretty and Jimmie fell for her hard -- not knowing she was a prostitute on infamous Post Office Street, with ties to the mob. Then Ida was abducted and never seen again. Now, decades later, Robicheaux is asking questions about Ida Durbin, and a couple of redneck deputy sheriffs make it clear that asking questions is a dangerous game. With a series of horrifying murders and the sudden appearance of Valentine Chalons and his sister, Honoria, a disturbed and deeply alluring woman, Robicheaux is soon involved not only with the Chalons family but with the murderous energies of the New Orleans underworld. Also, he meets and finds himself drawn into a scandalous relationship with a remarkable Catholic nun. Brilliant, brooding, and filled with the author's signature lyricism, Jim Burke's latest novel is a darkly suspenseful work of literature. |
