Papyrus, Cyperus papyrus, is a member of the family aquatic sedge plants. It is endemic to Africa, especially the Nile valley, where it was used to make the first paper in world history. It grows in shallow waters and conspicuous at flowering stems that can reach up 5 meters. Each stem is topped by thin, shiny, bright green stems that look like feather dusters. As the stems grow, they elongate and bend to the clusters almost spherical. During the summer the plant bears small dark brown fruit.
Papyrus plants have a variety of uses for the Egyptians, more popularly for the production of papyrus paper. Its flowers are used to make garlands that were offered to the gods. The young shoots are eaten both raw and cooked. The woody roots are used for making bowls and other utensils and firewood. The stems are used for manufacturing mats boats, sails, cloth, sandals, baskets and ropes.
Papyrus, or paper made from the pith of the papyrus plant, is thick and hard. It was not originally used for writing since its surface is not smooth and it can not be bent without cracking. It was as fragile and easily succumbed to moisture or excessive dryness. Only good quality papyrus was used for writing. As it was not good for writing, he was replaced by vellum and parchment, which were more durable and resistant to moisture.
The last recorded use of the papyrus plant for the manufacture of paper was in mid-1000. It was used at that time to the decrees of the pope. Currently, papyrus are mainly used for decoration. In some wetlands Africa, however, these plants are still the main sources of livelihood.
