Crafts Ancient Rome
In the second millennium BC, the Romans emerged from a small village near Rome to begin a course of expansion that was to make them the dominant power in the Mediterranean. In the 1st century AD Roman territories expanded from Britain in northern Egypt in the south. Much of Roman culture and crafts reflected the previous period Hellenistic However, their extensive trade network provided them with a variety of materials. Artisans often combined styles and materials to create their own unique designs. Terracotta (Clay) pottery was manufactured and used throughout the Middle East and was produced in the early settlements along the Fertile Crescent where the clay is abundant and varied in color. The early potters had the resources with which to experiment, create and develop their styles. Pottery was done as a course rather, porous clay that when fired, assumes a color ranging from tan to dark red, and generally left unglazed. The Most of the pottery clay was commercial because of its low cost, versatility and durability. As the art methods and improved firing, a variety of forms evolved. The most widely used pottery in the ancient world was an oil lamp, bottles, unguentariums, pitchers, bowls and plates, their basic shapes remain unchanged for over a thousand years and still used in today's modern world. The oil lamp was the source of light in every home, bottles and pitchers were used to store wine, water and other liquids, holding unguentarium oils, spices, ointments and balms and bowls and plates were used to eat and keep food. The amphora, classic in form, was used for storage and shipment in the ancient world and was intended for household use and to hold wine, oil, spices and ointments.
The Bronze Age is not a period of time. Some regions have seen their Bronze Age early, others that she had late and others ignored the Bronze Age in total. The primary function of any metal industry in antiquity was production of weapons and tools. A spear, also known as the spearhead, has been ranked as the main weapon used in the battle of ancient Asia and Europe. The famous Greek poet Homer, tells how Achilles speared Hector by the spirit of the neck a heavy pole bronze. spear points have played an important role in history and have changed as men have learned to make new equipment. Although metals made the best of all spear men linked to the top of the jagged pieces of stone on their throwing sticks until they learned shape the spearhead from pieces of flint. In the 2nd millennium BC, the Romans emerged from a small village near Rome to begin a course of expansion that was to make them the dominant power in the Mediterranean. In the 1st century AD Roman territories expanded of Great Britain in northern Egypt in the south. The Roman army was originally composed of citizens whose duty was to serve in wartime. Time of Caesar, in 40 BC, most soldiers were professionals in a standing army, forming a civilizing force as well as a conquest.

Written by an archaeologist who has spent much of his life in the Near East, the book is not a conventional "guide" to the antiquities of Anatolia, nor is it a textbook. It is instead Lloyd's attempt to share his profound interest in an antique land, its inhabitants, and the surviving monuments that link the present to the past. Lloyd traces the many different cultures that have been a part of Turkey from prehistoric times to the Christian era. He recounts the exploits of the Hittite kings, the confrontation of Croesus and the Persian king Cyrus, the conquests of Alexander the Great, and Mithridates' epic resistance against Rome. Archaeological landmarks discussed include the discovery of the Alaca Huyuk tombs, the attempts to establish the location of Troy, and the opening of the Tomb of Midas. Lloyd shows how each successive culture has left its mark on an astonishing variety of sites, from the shrines of catal Huyuk to the temples of Ephesus and the churches founded by St. Paul. |

Society, the Sacred and Scripture in Ancient Judaism $85 This work explores the relationship between religion, social patterns, and the perception of the character of scripture in four modes of Ancient Judaism: (1) the Jerusalem community of the fifth to fourth centuries B.C.E. (ie, the Early Second Temple Period); (2) the Judaism of the Graeco-Roman Disapora down to the end of the fourth century of the Christian Era; (3) earliest rabbinic Judaism in the second century C.E> in the land of Israel; (4) Late Antique Talmudic Rabbinism, primarily inn Babylonia, down to the sixth century of the Christian Era. Lightstone attempts not only to describe these perceptions and relationships but also to account for them, to explore why scripture should be thus perceived. His imaginative approach to the challenging descriptive and theoretical tasks is influenced by literary and form-critical methods as well as by the methods and perspectives of social anthropology and sociology of the mind. This unique attempts at revising the perception of the character of scripture should arouse the interest of scholars and students of Ancient Judaism. |
